Delhi NCR Project

The Delhi project was started in 1998 in Gurgaon operating mobile unit to cover Gurgaon, Delhi &NCR and maintaining a shelter for the injured and sick equines at Sadhrana, Gurgaon. In 2005 we shifted our base to Delhi and since thenhave been working in the City sites in Delhi and NCR(Noida, Gurgaon& Faridabad)where predominantly donkeys are owned and worked.

Base or location: Delhi DSI Office Project summary
  • Donkeys are working in ‘Building construction sites’.
  • Donkeys carry load in packs saddles to high rise by climbing stairs.
  • The community (OUD) working with these donkeys has migrated from Pakistan during India independence in 1947.

Apart from the city sites the Delhi projects major work is in improving the welfare of working equines in the Brick kilns. The team visitsBrick Kiln sites neighbouring Delhi, where it organises health and education sessions for donkey owners as well as training for paravet’s and vets. The project is expanding to areas such as Badli, Neemrana & Faridabad to take the welfare of working equines in the brick kilns in those areas.


DSI / Delhi region / BADLI Brick kilns

Base or location: DSI Delhi Office

Number of brick kilns: 185 / Season: December – June


Project summary
  • Equines are worked in Brick kilns by cart. They are pulling carts with load of 600-750 bricks in their cart.
  • In a day 5-6 equines are carrying load of 15000-20000 bricks.
  • Mix of different communities with different socio economic status.
  • Welfare status is compromised.

DSI Delhi working to

  • Improve husbandry practises that impacts equine health and welfare.
  • Reduce lameness cases by improving hoof care practises by equine owners and work with brick kiln owner to maintain topography of brick kilns across the season.
  • Capacity building of local Service providers (for health / farriery / carts / harness).
  • Liaison and support MUNIM’S (Managers) in Brick Kiln operations to improve welfare.

DSI / Delhi region / Faridabad Brick kilns

Base or location: DSI Delhi Office

Number of brick kilns: 108 / Season: December – June

Project summary:
  • Equines working in Brick kilns with cart. The season starts late thus target per day for equines is higher till end of season.
  • Mix of communities with different socio economic status leading to unfit animals being worked.
  • Welfare status is highly compromised.
